Educational Attainment by Race/Ethnicity and Gender

The following data comes from the United States Census Bureau. They have compiled multiple datasets depicting the educational attainment of those 18 years and older in the United States. Learn about the disparities of educational attainment compared between race and ethnicity, as well as gender, below.

Explanation

The y-axis represents the number of graduates, while the x-axis represents the level of educational attainment by grade level, and each color on the line chart depicts a race or ethnicity. On the far right side of this visualization is a filtering system for the user to choose which gender(s) to display and compare. The user may select one gender at a time via radio buttons to view the races' educational attainment by gender. By using line charts, the user can easily view the trend of educational attainment between each group and determine which races and ethnicities achieve higher or lower education.

Analysis

While viewing this overall line chart above, we can see that there are some large discrepancies. When any gender is selected, the number of white graduates far surpasses the number for any other race/ethnicity. When we switch viewing between genders, the number of graduates slightly lessens from male to female. As the y-axis and number of graduates change with gender, we see the overall pattern of the chart stay the same with the number of white graduates highly exceeding the number of Asian, Black, and Hispanic graduates.

Educational Attainment by Race:

Note: Notice the different y-axis values on the different charts.

Explanation

The y-axis continues to represent the number of graduates, and the x-axis continues to represents the level of educational attainment by grade level, while each color on each line chart depicts a different gender for that chart's specific race/ethnicity. On the right side of each visualization is a filtering system for the user to choose which gender(s) to display and compare within that race/ethnicity. Using the check boxes, the user may select up to all three gender categories at once. These line charts help the user to view the trend of educational attainment between genders within a race/ethnicity, and see if males or females achieve higher or lower education.

Analysis

These individual charts help us the see the differences between male and female rates of educational attainment within the same race/ethnicity with a better lens. Here, we can see that the educational attainment rate is very similar between males and females for each race. This is significant, as we can now see that there is not a large discrepancy or large gender gap between male and female rates. We now know that the problem we need to focus on lies with the disparities of different rates of educational attainment between different races/ethnicities.
